Health tourism is booming. The European medical spas become more and more popular. Hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world visit Europe every year for spa medical treatments. Needless to say, locals use regularly health spas to stay health and overall well-being. The focus of the healthy spa vacation is medical spa treatments, fitness and recreational activities which intend to improve the quality of life.
What is a medical spa? It is a health and rehabilitation center where visitors can improve their health, prevent illnesses and treat some medical conditions. European medical spa differs from the North American spa which provides services for beauty and relaxation through personal care treatments. The healing power of nature, such as mineral spring water, salt, herbs, medical mud, and climate are utilized for therapeutic treatments. It was widely used for different health-related treatments for centuries.

Other essential elements that are offered in a medical spa include medical examinations and tests, exercises, medical wellness services, relaxation techniques and lectures how to prevent disease, live healthier or tips for coping with chronic illness. Healing benefits of nature are recognized. Medical spa procedures are the keys to successful rehabilitation after surgery or accident. The therapeutic treatments are used for healing a variety of diseases and can be an excellent supplement to drugs and even their replacements for some diseases.

Each medical spa resort specializes in treatment for specific medical conditions/indications. The medical therapy and medical treatment plan for a guest at medical spa resorts is prescribed individually by a highly-qualified doctor, based on a client's health condition. The therapeutic treatment is performed by health care professionals only. It is recommended to stay two or three weeks for treatment at the resort. The preventive treatment can last a few days. The main purpose of preventive treatment is to relieve stress, relax and rejuvenate.

According to European Spa Association (ESPA), there are more than 18,000 resorts and facilities operating in health and wellness tourism in Europe. ESPA is the umbrella organization of 20 national health resort and spa associations.
